Taroko National Park: A Guide to Exploring Taiwan’s Natural Beauty

Taroko National Park is a hidden gem in Taiwan that offers breathtaking views of nature’s beauty. This vast park is known for its towering cliffs, deep canyons, and crystal-clear rivers. If you’re planning a trip to Taiwan, a visit to Taroko National Park should definitely be on your itinerary. In this guide, we’ll take you through some of the park’s must-see attractions and provide tips on how to make the most of your visit.

How to reach Taroko

We took a High Speed Rail(HSR) from Taipei to Hualien which takes less than 2 hours. Hualien can be used as a base to hike Taroko. The Taiwanese HSR has very Japanese bullet train feelings and is quite affordbale. You can also preorder your Bento meal which you can enjoy onboard.

Hiking the Taroko Gorge

The Taroko Gorge is the centerpiece of Taroko National Park, and it’s not hard to see why. The 20-kilometer long canyon features sheer marble walls that rise up to 1000 meters, making for some truly awe-inspiring views. If you’re up for a challenging hike, the Taroko Gorge Trail is definitely worth the effort. The trail is around 10 kilometers long and takes around 4-5 hours to complete, but the stunning views make it all worthwhile.

We did the Shakadang Trail which is a relatively easy hiking trail that offers beautiful views of the river and surrounding cliffs. The Swallow Grotto Trail is another popular hiking trail that takes you through a narrow canyon with spectacular views of the river below.

If hiking isn’t your thing, there are plenty of other ways to experience the natural beauty of Taroko National Park. For example, you can take a leisurely stroll through the park’s many gardens, or take a dip in one of the park’s many hot springs.

Visiting the Eternal Spring Shrine

Another must-see attraction in Taroko National Park is the Eternal Spring Shrine, a beautiful temple that is built into the mountainside. The temple offers stunning views of the Liwu River and the surrounding mountains, and it’s a great place to stop and reflect on the natural beauty of the park. Make sure to take your time exploring the temple’s grounds and gardens, which are just as beautiful as the temple itself.
